40 years of the Spanish Constitution

The Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C. celebrates the 40 Anniversary of the Spanish Constitution.

The event begins with opening remarks by Spanish Ambassador Santiago Cabanas, followed by the presentation of Argelia Queralt, professor at the University of Barcelona, on the topic “40 Years of the Spanish Constitution”. The presentation will be followed by a dialogue with the audience, moderated by Amanda Mars.

In the context of the 40 Anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, professor Queralt also presents España constitucional (1978-2018): Trayectorias y Perspectivas, a book published by the Spanish Center for Political and Constitutional Studies in 2018. In this five-volume project with a prologue by H.M. King Felipe VI and supervised by Benigno Pendás, more than 300 specialists in Law, Political Science, Sociology, History, and other Social Science disciplines provide an overview of the last 40 years of Spain’s history.

About Argelia Queralt

Argelia Queralt Jiménez earned the title of Doctor of Law at the University of Barcelona, where she currently works as Serra Húnter Associate Professor of Constitutional Law in the Department of Political Science, Constitutional Law and Philosophy of Law. Professor Queralt is member of Grup d’Estudis Constitutionals i Eruopeus, a research group on constitutional and European studies. Her research focuses on legal protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, and processes of political integration. Professor Queralt is the author of around 50 papers and two monographs.

Since 2014, she serves as Spokesperson of the Board of Directors of the Constitutionalists Association of Spain and was recently appointed Spokesperson of the Governing Council of the Spanish Centre for Political and Constitutional Studies.

In the field of science communication, Queralt works as editorial director of Agenda Pública, writes articles for Spanish newspaper El País, and participates in several radio shows in Spain.

The event will take place in Spanish and conclude with a Spanish wine reception.
