30th Annual Festival Flamenco Internacional de Albuquerque

The 30th Annual Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque runs June 10-17, 2017 at the University of New Mexico, and features 35 workshops and more than 20 flamenco shows.

The 30th Annual Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque hits the city June 10-17, 2017 at UNM, Rodey Theatre, the National Hispanic Cultural Center & Tablao Flamenco Albuquerque. The lure of flamenco is its ability to explore the full range of human emotion with an intense, vibrant quality.

Festival Flamenco will feature six main stage performances by Compañias Marco Flores, María Moreno, Adrián Santana, Pepe Torres, Rosario Toledo, and Jesús Carmona. Other highlights include 35 workshops, tablao y cante performances, a Black Tie Gala, the Flamenco History & Research Symposium, and the Fiesta de Apertura student showcase.

Compañia Marco Flores: Entrar al Juego

In this show, Marco Flores manipulates space and experiments with time. Slowing it down, changing its direction, speeding it up. He opens up a temporary special time-line from another world to trap people and objects in an alternative dimension. With the pretext of an appointment or an encounter, and with the obligation of entering the game he proposes, in this new work Marco Flores aims to enlarge his artistic poetry and his choreographic dynamics, expanding his artistic focus and direction.

Compañia María Moreno: Alas de Recuerdo

A state of mind through which María travels by means of the most classic flamenco, and with which she explores some of the facets of the great emotional gamut offered by flamenco.

Compañia Adrián Santana: Simbiosis

Bodies that sketch feelings which flow out in a different way, and which unite forces that belong to the most intimate corners of our respective identities – identities unintentionally bound, far from the persistent quest to create in an orderly way, and yet happening just like that, without a predetermined motif. The sheer pleasure of sharing apparently diverse impulses, though intensely interwoven, the main pillar that makes Simbiosis a work in which natural forces feedback to themselves and coexist in harmony, keeping alive and loved a space in which everything is yet to happen.

Compañia Pepe Torres: Jirones de Gitanería

Art, duende, and those magic-filled moments that define flamenco last only for an instant. The heart is capricious, and what remains from those moments is kept in one’s memory, what remains in the eye’s retina. In Jirones de Gitanería, the baile (dance) reigns as an identity that is colored with the love that the artist holds for the guitar.

Compañia Rosario Toledo: ADN

An artistic personality is determined by many factors: one’s own experiences, the fact of having been born at a specific moment, the conditioning factor of being a man or a woman and, of course, the place of origin. In the case of Rosario Toledo, her career, her being a female flamenco dancer in the early 21st century with the legacy of Cádiz in every pore of her output, have made for immense and unique artistic material. In this show, that essence is sought, the particular and non-transferable DNA of an interpreter who yearns to know, amidst the chaos, what does it mean in this precise moment to be a “bailaahora” (“dancer now”).

Compañia Jesús Carmona: Impetu’s

Since his beginnings as a dancer in other companies, right through to the first steps with his own company and the maturity reached during those years, Jesús Carmona has always aimed to have his creations serve as a showcase for Spanish culture, on this occasion even going beyond that goal, making his work a breath of fresh air for the great musical compositions of his country. In this show he has sought to reflect all those musical pieces that have contributed to his artistic growth, and which, in one way or another, have built his life and character, both professionally and personally.
