LA International Flamenco Festival 2024

The 2024 edition of the “Los Angeles International Flamenco Festival” features world-renowned flamenco artists such as Tomatito, José Maya, Rycardo Moreno and Andrés Barrios.

Since 2010, the Los Angeles International Flamenco Festival has presented world-class flamenco performances to Los Angeles, presenting some of the most acclaimed and influential flamenco artists direct from Spain, many making their first U.S./L.A. appearances.

Tomatito

Tomatito is back in L.A. for his first show since 2016. José Fernández Torres, known as Tomatito, is a renowned flamenco guitarist from Spain. He gained fame in 1973 as a young prodigy, discovered by Paco de Lucía and invited to play with the legendary singer Camarón de la Isla at just 15. Tomatito, a talented Roma teenager from Almería, had a remarkable career in flamenco music. He recorded four influential albums in the 1980s with de Lucía and El Camarón, and collaborated with artists like Enrique Morente, José Mercé, and Carmen Linares. As a solo artist, Tomatito has released over a dozen albums since his debut in 1987, earning multiple Grammu and Latin Grammy Awards. He will be joined by special guest dancer Karime Amaya for the performance.

At only 13 years of age, José Maya was already touring across Spain with “El Güito” and Manolete. Born into a gypsy family of painters, actors and writers, Maya’s lineage includes the historic bailaora Fernanda Romero and the cantaor Rafael Romero “El Gallina.” Maya has shared the stage with international pop stars such as Marc Anthony, Beyoncé , Björk and Juan Luis Guerra as well as flamenco stars Antonio Canales, Juan Ramírez and Farruquito & many more.

Rycardo Moreno, a renowned flamenco and jazz guitarist, producer, arranger, and composer, was born in Lebrija to a Gypsy family. He began playing music at 11 years old and has collaborated with artists like Dorantes, Esperanza Fernandez, Buika, and El Lebrijano. A 2019 Latin Grammy winner with Arcangel, Moreno performs as a soloist, in a trio or alongside artists such as Tomás de Perrate, La Tremendita, Jorge Pardo, or Ana Morales.

Andrés Barrios

  • On Thursday, March 7 at 7 pm. Opening for Tomatito at At Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.
  • On Saturday, March 9 at at 7 pm. Opening for José Maya with Rycardo Moreno at Wilshire Ebell Theater.

Pianist Andrés Barrios Navarro, trained at Bonifacio Gil Conservatory of Badajoz under pianist Ángel Sanzo, completed his Professional Degree at Francisco Guerrero Conservatory in Seville, receiving the Honorary End of Year Award. His style honors Spanish nationalist composers like Albéniz, Turina, Falla, and modern masters such as Camarón, Paco de Lucía, Chick Corea, Chucho Valdés, Michel Camilo, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Tigran Hamasyan. He will be accompanied by special guest dancer Mizuho Sato.
