In this Detroit Opera premiere merging flamenco and opera, Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov address the broad concept of freedom by drawing inspiration from the last moments of the awarded Spanish poet Federico García Lorca who was murdered by the fascist Falange militia during the Spanish Civil War due to his political views and sexual orientation.
Fountains of Tears also renders homage to the artists who kept alive the legacy of García Lorca in Latin America while his plays were forbidden in Spain. It does it through the character of Margarita Xirgu, a Spanish actress very close to the Andalusian poet whose company performed Lorca works in different Argentinian theaters.
It’s a simultaneous hit on all the senses, combining the noble passions of opera with the instant-fix adrenaline of a West End musical.
