Tramontana at Cimientos 2022

IATI Theater’s play development program, “Cimientos 2022,” holds a staged reading series with Spanish playwright Juanma Romero.

Ten playwrights are selected every year to participate in IATI Theater’s incubator play development program, Cimientos. At the end of the one-year program, the works developed during Cimientos are presented as a series of staged readings at IATI Theater. The Cimientos 2022 Staged Reading Series will be held on June 8-12, 2022, spotlighting national and cross-continental contemporary writers, including Tramontana by Juanma Romero Gárriz on June 11 at 3 pm.

Tramontana

  • Written by Juanma Romero Gárriz and directed by Pablo Andrade.
  • In Spanish. With Josean Ortiz, Reynaldo Romero and Yessi Hernández.

Two fishermen, a father and a son, live at the base of a lighthouse next to a cold windy beach. One morning, hundreds of thousands of refugees appear on the shore. The son wants to help them, but the father forbids it; still, the son comes into contact with them. The appearance of the foreigners awakens the call of adventure in the son, challenging the authority of the father. Around them, a mysterious character, The Sandwoman, will reopen the wounds of the past.

Tramontana evokes the Spanish exile in 1939, from the perspective of the host country, France. The work, however, resonates in the exiles of the present, starting from the most essential conflict: the struggle between selfishness and solidarity, when an entire people needs our help.
