Landscape with Yellow Birds

Reading and discussion of José Ángel Valente’s renowned poetry, recently translated to English by Thomas Christensen.

Tom Christensen brings the words of José Ángel Valente, one of the greatest Spanish poets of the 20th Century, to U.S. audiences through the recently published book Landscape with Yellow Birds.

Valente earned his fame for keeping himself and his art outside of political polarization, yet his lyrical verses and their poetic musings stood as an argument for the necessity of art and imagination even in Franco’s Spain.

This reading and discussion will give audiences the chance to hear Valente’s inspirational words not only in their original Spanish, but also in Christensen’s faithful and striking English translation.

  • Landscape with Yellow Birds: a bilingual reading, on September 26 from 12 pm to 3 pm at Whittall Pavillion, Thomas Jefferson Building, Library of Congress, 10 First Street, SE.
