Don Juan Tenorio

A sensual and contemporary retelling of Don Juan’s burning passions, brimming with poetic text and echoes of romantic and religious dramas.

Don Juan Tenorio

  • On Thursday, Friday and Saturdays at 8 pm; Sundays at 2 pm. World premiere adaptation. In Spanish with English surtitles.
  • By Fernando J. López (adaptation), from text by Federico García Lorca. Directed by José Carrasquillo.

In this new, high-voltage adaptation, the legendary and iconic seducer pursues his conquests with fierce determination until the purity of love brings him to his knees. The commissioned adaptation is by Spanish playwright Fernando J. López, who also adapted for GALA García Lorca’s Yerma, the winner of several 2016 Helen Hayes Awards, including Outstanding Production.

Don Juan Tenorio is directed by Puerto Rican director José Carrasquillo, a longtime collaborator at GALA. Carrasquillo also directs at many other local theatres such as Studio, Round House, Wooly Mammoth, and WSC Avant Bard, where he directed Medea, Lady Macbeth and Blood Wedding.

The cast includes two actors from Spain: GALA’s company actress from Madrid Luz Nicolás, in the role of Brígida the housekeeper, and guest Basque actor Iker Lastra, who will take on the role of Don Juan. Mr. Lastra was nominated in 2016 to the Helen Hayes Award in the category of Supporting Actor for his performance of Victor in Yerma.
