AFI Latin American Film Festival 2024

“The AFI Latin American Film Festival” showcases the best filmmaking from Latin America and celebrates Ibero-American cultural connections, including films from Spain and Portugal.

Now in its 35th year, the AFI Latin American Film Festival, which will run September 19–October 10, is one of North America’s largest and longest-running showcases of Latin American cinema. With the inclusion of films from Spain and Portugal, the festival celebrates Ibero-American cultural connections during National Hispanic Heritage Month.

The festival showcases numerous favorites from international film festivals, award winners, local box office hits, and debut works by promising new talents. It is one of Washington’s top cultural events, offering an opportunity to see a selection of new films and engage in discussions with a diverse audience of filmmakers and film lovers.

The film follows Leo’s life, an author. He is visited by a man claiming to be a journalist in a secret location where Leo is penning his next novel, but only his agent knows where he is.

María Margarita (Sara Becker), the youngest of four siblings, has a preternatural ability to perfectly recount the movies she sees as a welcome gift, considering her family can only afford one movie ticket to the only cinema in their mining town nestled in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Word of her unique skill spreads throughout the village, and soon everyone pays a visit to hear her stories and be transported to a better world, if only for a brief, imaginary moment.
