2018 San Diego Latino Film Festival

The 25th edition of San Diego Latino Film Festival screens a large selection of films from Latin America, Spain and the United States.

Media Arts Center San Diego established San Diego Latino Film Festival 25 years ago, initially as a student film festival focusing on works by Latinos and/or about the Latino Experience. Since then, the San Diego Latino Film Festival has developed into one of the larger and well-respected Latino film festivals in the nation, where over 3,880 films and videos from across Latin America, Spain and the United States have been screened.

Carlos Saura, a living legend. Felix Viscarret, a director who wants to make a film portrait of the great master. He comes up with a plan he thinks is brilliant. He’ll show the intimate side of Saura through conversations between the genius and his 7 children. Everyone accepts. But Saura doesn’t like talking about the past. Viscarret insists. A look at how the sport of Basketball has shaped the lives of the children of the Triqui Region in the Mexican State of Oaxaca. The harsh mountainous terrain and various limitations within the community leaves very little hope to the youth of the land. Through the Mexican Indigenous Basketball Association and their Professor Sergio the boys and girls will find the hope that they had been lacking.

In their mid-30s, Eva and Kat’s humble, yet carefree, lifestyle in their London canal boat gets turned upside down when Eva presents Kat with an ultimatum: she wants a child. Kat resists, knowing that it will end the bohemian lifestyle she’s always envisioned with Eva. When Kat’s best friend, Roger, drops in from Barcelona, they decide to use him as a donor to start a family, leading them to redefine their concept of what it means to be a family.

The wrongly-termed Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) left more than a million dead and over 500 thousand refugees, of which some 20 thousand are taken in by Mexico. Among them were the filmmaker’s grandparents, parents, aunt, and some of their friends. A tragedy of epic dimensions that turned into the eventful stories of survival and assimilation by the subjects, recalling their experiences and revealing the shared history between Mexico and Spain in the 20th century and beyond.

An expedition to a remote island in the Eastern seaboard of the United States leads Basque researchers to discover mesmerizing facts about the region’s former indigenous inhabitants. Their findings indicate a different world existed and that perhaps a reconstruction of the past can inspire a brighter future.

The dark history of Spain’s Franco era, including the punishing persecution of the LGBTQ community, is the subject of this absorbing and unsettling documentary. This moving documentary is centered around the poetry and actions of famed Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, a longtime symbol of the gay movement in the Franco dictatorship.
