Speaking with NASA's Dr. Begoña Vila

In this video, Dr. Begoña Vila shares her knowledge on the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope by NASA.

On January 5, 2022, the Embassy of Spain in the United States went to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center to speak with Dr. Begoña Vila, a Spanish astrophysicist and Systems Engineer for the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope.

The telescope, an international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency, is the largest and most complex to be launched into space up until now, and will provide great insights into the creation of the universe. Dr. Vila talked about the James Webb, what they hope to discover with it, and the Spanish and European contribution to the telescope and NASA as a whole.

Dr. Begoña Vila is an Instrument Systems Engineer for the James Webb Space Telescope at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. She supported Webb’s cryogenic testing at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston in 2017, she will support testing for the observatory throughout 2018, and she is also helping plan Webb’s commissioning. Vila actively engages in Spanish and English media interviews and outreach activities for the Webb program, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) events.

Vila holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester in England. She also has a degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Santiago de Compostela and Tenerife in Spain.
