Esperanza Fernández: Un recital de cante

Sevilla-born singer Esperanza Fernández accompanied by guitarist Gabriel Gonzalez presents a night of Flamenco cante at Teatro Circulo’s new recital space.

Fernández is a gypsy singer from Sevilla, Spain, who holds on strongly to her traditional roots but also experiments with the form.

Al Margen is a New York-based Flamenco dance company that explores traditional boundaries in the form through a contemporary lens. Co-founded in 2016 by Maria de los Angeles and Ryan Rockmore, Al Margen seeks to challenge the stereotypical ideas of Flamenco and strip the style down to its most basic elements. Rockmore, with his academic research lens, and de los Angeles, with her strong base in multiple dance styles, both manipulate and experiment with Flamenco through their individual backgrounds.

Al Margen is entering its second year as a company in residence at Teatro Círculo, a Pan-Latino and Spanish theater company based in New York City’s East Village. After presenting their first work, Adorno, for the inaugural season, in 2017, Rockmore & de los Angeles are now creating a new work that examines Lorca and his theory of duende. Through multimedia and interdisciplinary approaches to the form, Al Margen continues to push the boundaries of Flamenco, with respect to traditional customs, and explore what exists on the margins of the art form.

Wine and appetizers will be served at 7:45 pm, and Esperanza Fernández will be available afterwards to chat with attendees.
