Carmen by the National Dance Company of Spain

Award-winning choreographer Johan Inger’s “Carmen” reduces the classic story to its mythical and universal elements of passion and revenge.
Founded in 1979, the Compañía Nacional de Danza, currently under the artistic direction of Joaquin De Luz, former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre, makes its debut at The Joyce with Carmen, in a version by award-winning choreographer Johan Inger.
With music by Georges Bizet, arrangements by Rodion Shchedrin, and additional original music by Marc Álvarez, Inger’s Carmen reduces the classic story to its mythical and universal elements of passion and revenge.
Returning to Prosper Mérimée’s original novel for inspiration, Inger frames the action through the eyes of a child, re-examining the characters through a contemporary prism.
