Burp: Adventures in Eating and Cooking by Mercedes Cebrián

Spanish writer Mercedes Cebrián presents the English translation of her latest book focused on her culinary experiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

Standing at the crossroads of travel, food, and personal essay writing, Mercedes Cebrián’s new book, Burp. Adventures in Eating and Cooking, is a reflection on food ways on both sides of the Atlantic, drawing on her experiences living among posh London freegans, “gazelle-like” West Philly gentrifiers, and cunning Madrid grocers. Lending her insider-outsider perspective, Cebrián treats the reader to a fresh take on the constantly evolving culture of food and our relationship to it.

Cebrián (b. 1971, Madrid, Spain) has published narrative, essays, and poetry. Her book La nueva taxidermia (Mondadori, 2011) was a finalist for the Tigre Juan Prize in 2012. Her most recent collection of poems is Malgastar (La Bella Varsovia, 2016). Cebrián is a regular contributor to Viajero and Babelia, cultural supplements to Spain’s El País newspaper.

She has translated into Spanish works by Georges Perec, Alan Sillitoe, and Miranda July, among other authors. She received a grant to study Literature from the Academia de España en Roma (Academy of Spain in Rome) and has been author in residence at the Civitella Ranieri Center and the Fondazione Santa Maddalena. She has a master’s degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

Cebrián will be accompanied by translator Lindsay Griffith.
