Bitter Laughter: Graphic novels from Latin America & Spain

Spanish comic book artist and illustrator Belén Ortega is featured in the 3rd edition of the conference Bitter Laughter, which brings the boldest and most controversial cartoonists from Latin America and Spain to New York City.

This new edition of Bitter Laughter looks into the boom of comics and graphic novels from Latin America and Spain, which have a unique history of addressing controversial political, cultural, and social issues. Join Puerto Rican graphic novelist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, author of the graphic novel Recanstruction; Argentinian cartoonist, writer, and humorist Darío Adanti, editor and co-founder of the satirical magazine Mongolia; and Spanish comic book artist and illustrator Belén Ortega, awarded for her work in the Manga genre.

About Belén Ortega

Belén Ortega (Granada, 1986) graduated from Fine Arts at the University of Granada and her passion for Japanese manga led her soon to fantasy illustration and comic creation. She completed her comic studies at the Human Academy of Osaka, Japan. Ortega published her beginner stories in various magazines and it was in 2011 when she published her first book Himawari (Ediciones Glénat), a history of samurais inspired by the medieval Japan. Himawari was awarded in the Salón del Manga de Barcelona. In 2015, she published Pájaro Indiano (Norma Editorial), a fable that took place in the Costa Brava at the end of the 19th century; as well as Artbook (Ominiky Ediciones), a compilation book of her illustrations to date. Her latest book is entitled Marc Márquez: La historia de un sueño. Ortega is currently working on Millennium, by Stieg Larsson.
