Artists' books by Andrés Barba and Alberto Pina

This display at the New York Public Library presents four artists’ books made by the Spanish artist Alberto Pina and Spanish writer Andrés Barba.

The two Spanish artists participating this exhibition met at the Spanish Academy in Rome in 2003 and regularly work together on artists’ books produced through their press, El cañón de Garibaldi ediciones. This display features four of their collaborations. The first three were published in Spain by El cañón de Garibaldi ediciones; the fourth was made in New York during Barba’s fellowship at NYPL’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers.

About Andrés Barba

Andrés Barba is a Spanish novelist, essayist, poet, and translator. He is the author of more than 15 books, which have been translated into over 20 languages, and the winner of such prizes as the Premio de Narrativa Torrente Ballester, the Premio de Novela Breve Juan March Cencillo, Premio Herralde de Novela, and the Premio Anagrama de Ensayo. In 2010 he was selected by Granta as one of the best young Spanish-language novelists.

Barba’s titles in translation include Rain Over Madrid (2015), August, October (2015), Such Small Hands (2017), The Right Intention (2018), and A Luminous Republic (2020). His most recent book, Vida de Guastavino y Guastavino (2021), is a biography of the architect Rafael Guastavino, Sr., which Barba wrote as the Jean Strouse Fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers.

About Alberto Pina

Alberto Pina is an artist and printmaker who studied at the Complutense University of Madrid and the Academy of Spain in Rome, where he met Andrés Barba. Through portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, Pina explores methods for depicting reality in its broad and conventional normality. His work utilizes a perceptive and personal language, in which a certain metaphysical intention and a realism charged with serene melancholy coexist.
