A conversation with Joaquín de Luz from Compañía Nacional de Danza

On the occasion of the New York premiere of “Carmen” by the Compañía Nacional de Danza at the Joyce Theatre we will talk with Joaquín de Luz, director of the company.
Joaquín de Luz is currently director of Spanish National Dance Company and former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. He was formerly with the American Ballet Theatre, and a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. He is currently director of Spanish National Dance Company.
The ballet Carmen was created for the Compañía Nacional de Danza in 2015 by the prestigious Swedish choreographer Johan Inger. When Johan Inger was asked to create a new version of Carmen, being himself Swedish and Carmen a piece with a strong Spanish nature, he faced an enormous challenge. But it was also a great opportunity. The story witnessed through the eyes of a young watcher reveals the tale stripped to its mythic and universal elements of passion and violence.
