Spanish Young Music Talents: Joan Miquel Fiol in Miami

Spanish pianist Joan Miquel Fiol performs at Florida International University, as part of his participation in the program “Spanish Young Music Talents.”

Spanish Young Music Talents (SYMT) is the new program of the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. SYMT has been envisioned to enhance and support Spanish young musicians’ careers, in collaboration with U.S. music schools and universities at a higher level (bachelor and graduate students orchestras), offering them an experience abroad.

SYMT aims to offer young musicians not only a concert or recital in the U.S., but a complete experience with complementary activities such as masterclasses, talks, conferences, etc. to broaden their opportunities and contacts. All visiting musicians are winners of the Juventudes Musicales de España national award and under 30 years old.

Program

The FIU Symphony Orchestra, under the masterful direction of Spanish guest conductor Vicente Luna, presents an evening of monumental works. The concert features Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica, a piece that forever altered the landscape of classical music with its bold and heroic spirit. Spain’s acclaimed pianist Joan Miquel Fiol Villegas will play Mozart’s Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K.466, renowned for its dramatic intensity and lyrical beauty.

Joan Miquel Fiol

Pianist Joan Miquel Fiol, a native of Mallorca, has pursued a musical career since the age of four. He recently won first prize in the Juventudes Musicales de España competition. During his training in Mallorca, he studied under Irek Jagla and Diana de Lauzón, earning awards in the island’s major piano competitions. He has also performed in numerous concerts across the Balearic Islands.

At 17, he began studying with Marta Zabaleta at Musikene, where he received instruction from renowned pianists, including Gustavo Díaz-Jerez, Maciej Pikulski, Ricardo Descalzo, Noelia Rodiles, Benedicte Palko, Loïc Mallie, and David Lively. During his time in the Basque Country, he performed in numerous concerts in Donostia, Bilbao, Madrid, León, and Mallorca, as well as in Portugal and France. Notably, he debuted as a soloist with the Musikene Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Juanjo Mena. He is currently completing his Master’s Degree in Performance under Professor Miguel Borges at ESMAE, where he also receives guidance from pianist Pedro Burmester.
