Julio Montalvo Cuban Collective
This concert, led by trombonist and conductor Julio Montalvo, blends Afro-Cuban rhythms with contemporary trends in modern jazz.
In this concert, titled Julio Montalvo Cuban Collective, presented by the Spanish Cultural Center in collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, Montalvo highlights Afro-Cuban music infused with elements of Latin jazz. He takes us on a journey through instrumental pieces and songs.
Julio Montalvo Collective is the name of the project that Juio Montalvo, a Cuban-Spanish renowned avant-garde trombonist, leads as a soloist. It blends Afro-Cuban rhythms with modern jazz trends, creating a warm fusion of New Latin Jazz.
Montalvo is a composer, arranger, and conductor. As a record producer, he has released 20 titles. The Julio Montalvo Orchestra, in its Big Band format, offers a diverse repertoire that includes original Latin Jazz pieces and classic Afro-Cuban music. His first two albums were nominated for the Cuba Disco Awards in the category of Best Jazz Album in 2010 and 2013. The group can consist of a quartet or an ensemble of six or more musicians. They perform original compositions as well as a selection of Latin jazz covers, Cuban, and Brazilian music.
He has shared the stage with renowned musicians from the international jazz and Latin music scenes, including Pat Metheny, Perico Sambeat, the Sedajazz Big Band, Oscar D’León, Claudio Roditi, Lucrecia, Aymeé Nuviola, Dominique di Piazza, José Alberto El Canario, Iván Melón Lewis, La Elite, Darryl Hall, Donald Edwards, Mario Mayito Rivera, Alain Pérez, Angá Díaz, Mark Nightingale, Ximo Tébar, Tony Pérez, Los Van Van, José Negroni, and Mike Mossman, among others.
He has also collaborated with prominent figures in pop and rock music in Spain. Additionally, he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for David Bisbal’s acoustic album Una Noche en el Teatro Real, where he served as co-arranger and multi-instrumentalist.
