Enredos y traiciones is a free version of the play by María de Zayas published between 1618-1620, La traición en la amistad, adapted by Spanish director and playwright Eugenia Sancho. Sancho presents a classical comedy of entanglement, conceived with a contemporary language that helps bring the play closer to today’s audience. The play stars six actresses who play characters who do not hide behind the swords of their male guardians and who fight to love freely, exuding mischief and ingenuity.
About María de Zayas y Sotomayor
It is difficult to find a female writer in 1637 who dared to speak openly about women’s issues and questioned the patriarchal values of her time. Through her literary career, Zayas accomplished such things with great success and popularity, although her theater play was never staged. Enredos y traiciones is a free version of the comedy of entanglement La traición en la amistad by María de Zayas – A play that, back in the day could not make it to the stage, today is reimagined by six actresses and a female director who aspire to vindicate the relevance of Zayas’s theater in contemporary society.
