The “Miami Film Festival” showcases fourteen Spanish films and co-productions in its 42nd edition.

The Miami Film Festival has been a prominent cultural event for over four decades, highlighting innovative films and featuring influential industry figures. Since its inception in 1984, the Festival has grown into a globally recognized platform, consistently offering Miami’s diverse audience access to international cinema.

In this edition, the Festival features many Spanish films, as well as films with Spanish involvement or co-production. This provides an opportunity to showcase recent, internationally recognized works from the Spanish film industry.

The other way around

She has been waiting for this moment for too long, she has been dreaming about it for too long: this weekend will be an ideal weekend, even if she has to burn everything to do it.

Aranzazu Berradre Marín is a cop and she’s the only one able to infiltrate the Spanish terrorist group ETA. Not with her real name, Marín goes deep undercover, perplexing her enemies and astonishing her fellow officers. Arantxa Echevarría’s thriller is based on a true story and won the Goya for Best Film. Taking place over the course of eight years, Undercover follows Marín as she slowly worms her way into ETA, one of the most brutal terrorist organizations, who have murdered hundreds of people over the course of years. As Marín faces down sexism in her own ranks, she plumbs the depths of ETA in the hopes of breaking the organization’s back.

Caridad, a Cuban theater director exiled in Valencia, Spain, is determined to put together a play about the exodus of Cubans off the island. To do this, she proposes a dialogue with individuals, who from different perspectives tell her their experiences; all, at risk to their lives. With these testimonies it is proposed to develop a dynamic staging that leads to emotion, pain, and at times even to laughter. To carry out this dream, Caridad has close friends, all Cubans residing in Valencia will help her set up an unusual scenario in the middle of a lost industrial warehouse that allows you to express emotions through music, words, dance and scenography and explore uprooting, nostalgia and loss.

“There is no gate, no lock, no bolt, that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” Virginia Woolfe wrote in A Room of One’s Own. But what if your mind is so untethered and unruly you find yourself longing for the gate, for the lock, for the bolt? This is the conundrum N. faces. He is paralyzed by thoughts, by indecision, by a paradox of choice that makes it feel as if there is no choice at all. No one seems able to help him. And then he has an epiphany: Incarceration. He’s finally made a life decision, landing himself a prison sentence proves much more challenging than expected.

In 2004, Nevenka Fernandez, 24, a Finance Councillor in the Ponferrada City Council, was relentlessly harassed by the Mayor of her city, a man used to doing as he pleased, politically and personally. Nevenka decided to report him, knowing she would pay a very high price: those around her don’t support her, Ponferrada turns its back on her and she endures a tough public trial in the media. Her case marks the beginning, in Spain, of the “me too” movement long before the term was coined. A story based on real events. The person at the heart of it becomes a pioneer, the first woman to take a powerful, popular politician to court for sexual abuse and harassment in the workplace.

A Senegalese immigrant hides in the shed of an Andalusian manor house. From there he watches the daily life and the dynamics between the lady of the house, Carmina, and her young maid. One day she is discovered by Carmina, and some time later by the maid, but both hide it from each other, until an unforeseen event uncovers the secret.

Now, authorities have made their art illegal, ranking them just below drug cartels in the law, and driving them underground. With police and bounty hunters hot on their heels, Dargis embarks on a wild ride to witness the extreme obsession and sacrifice required to build these spectacular balloons that reach over 70 meters high and that require over 100 people to launch into the sky.

The cinematic adaptation of Elia Barceló’s critically acclaimed romance novel The Goldsmith’s Secret is set across three different moments in the 20th century. The film delves into the passionate relationship between a young man and a woman, grappling with the complexities of being in the “right place at the wrong time.” Drawing inspiration from classics such as Somewhere in Time and In the Mood for Love, the film is produced by Nostromo Pictures, known for their big budget productions as Palm Trees in the Snow.

The Exiles

Delia is a Chilean immigrant in Spain, whose sudden loss of her husband, Julian, has left her alone to raise her teenage daughter. When they face eviction, mother and daughter find themselves on different paths, in Belén Funes’ moving sophomore feature about the contours of identity, loss and love. Since her husband’s death, Delia has found herself driving a taxi for hours on end in Barcelona, a demeaning and exhausting job that helps keep grief at bay. Anabel, her daughter, is in college and forging her own path. At the center of the story is Julian’s family’s olive grove in the countryside, a place for which Delia now feels a sense of alienation while Anabel rekindles a sense of connection.

Alex, a young actress, is raped at a New Year’s Eve party but cannot identify her attacker. When she turns to her brother Adrian for help and support, he reacts by questioning and pressuring her. Alex distances herself from her brother and everything she knows. For a year she lives in solitude with disgust, shame and guilt. Adrian, consumed by rage, makes his own decisions on an increasingly dark path, far from what Alex needs. Meanwhile, she finds in theatre the only way to channel her pain and anger, playing the vengeful character of Medea.

Today marks the conclusion of Dante’s contract with La Flaca, the personification of death. As Dante reflects on his life before his death, he assists Monet, a ghost desperate to return to his body before it decomposes. Jacob, torn between his strict upbringing and his passion for drag, faces a pivotal moment as he prepares for his debut performance. However, keeping his secret from his devout parents jeopardizes his aspirations. In a bid to save his father’s life, Timbí journeys through the circles of hell, joined by Uma, a gypsy determined to win a bet with La Flaca in order to save her dying daughter. El Boticario, the devil, and Erato, a fallen angel, serve as the omniscient narrators of this world. Amidst this, the lives of these characters converge at the mythical bar Babel, where the living and the dead collide on a fateful night.
