Spanish Cinema Now + 2024 in Memphis

“Spanish Cinema Now +” brings the best of recent Spanish cinema to the local audience in Memphis, in multiple venues around the city.

Spanish Cinema Now + (SCN+) presents a selection of six new Spanish films that showcase the diversity and creativity of Spanish storytelling. SCN+ features a range of films that reflect the variety of styles and talents in Spain today, including both established auteurs and emerging filmmakers from the international festival circuit.

The film series will be part of the wider annual program Spanish Cultural Series, which aims to bring some of the newest artistic trends from Spain to Memphis. The first program of the annual series, Spanish Cinema Now +, is set to open Friday, October 25th at Rhodes College’s Blount Auditorium at 4 pm with two celebrated short films by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar: Strange Way of Life, a queer western starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, and The Human Voice, a loose adaptation of Jean Cocteau’s 1930 play, featuring Tilda Swinton. Both films will be presented in their original English versions.

The second night, scheduled for November 6th at 5 pm at the University of Memphis, will feature a screening of Four’s a Crowd, a romantic comedy by acclaimed director Álex de la Iglesia. The following film in the series, The Girls Are Alright, will take place on Tuesday, November 12th at 5 pm at Rhodes College. This film marks the directorial debut of Spanish writer and actress Itsaso Arana and explores female friendship by blending fiction and reality. The series will conclude with Alejandro Marín’s Love & Revolution, a historical LGBTQ+ drama starring Alba Flores, known for her role in the popular TV series Money Heist. This screening is set for Thursday, November 21st at 6 pm at Rhodes College.

The Human Voice

A woman watches time passing next to the suitcases of her ex-lover (who is supposed to come pick them up, but never arrives) and a restless dog who doesn’t understand that his master has abandoned him. Two living beings facing abandonment.

Strange Way of Life

After twenty-five years, Silva rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake. They celebrate the meeting, but the next morning, Jake tells him that reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their friendship.

Four’s a Crowd

In the wake of using a car-sharing mobile app to cope with his economic problems, Julián, a divorced man, meets Lorena, whom he begins to drive to Madrid on a regular basis, falling romantically for her. He is about to open up his feelings in one of those travels, but the situation takes an unexpected turn because of the selection of the rest of passengers.

The Girls Are Alright

Four actresses and a writer spend a week in an old mill rehearsing a play. During this time, the women get to know each other and explore their dynamics through the script. The interactions and conflicts that arise among them mirror their own lives and aspirations, fostering an atmosphere of discovery and personal transformation. Their experience in the mill becomes a journey of both professional and emotional growth, where artistic creation intertwines with friendship and introspection.

Love & Revolution

At a time when homosexuality is a crime, Reme, a traditional mother moved by love for her son, a teenage aspiring artist, will become involved in the Andalusian LGTBI movement, paradoxically conceived within the Church.
