Mario Gonzalez with L.A. Contemporary Dance Company

After his 2023 Creative Residency, Spanish dancer Mario González choreographs “The Weight of Water,” a piece presented in collaboration with L.A. Contemporary Dance.

L.A. Contemporary Dance Company (LACDC), a performance company dedicated to showcasing the artistry of L.A. in live and digital experiences, returns to the stage with four world premieres by Los Angeles and Spain-based choreographers showcasing works that explore how our inner lives influence our outer behavior.

On this occasion, Spanish dancer Mario González returns to the stage to present The Weight of Water. This piece was created during his 2023 creative residency and commissioned by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).

The Weight of Water

  • Choreography by Mario González, Myles Lavallee, Spenser Theberge, and LACDC’s artistic director Jamila Glass.

  • Assistant Choreographer: Carolina Alacreu.

When our minds are racing and the mental chatter gets too loud, how do we bring ourselves back to the middle to find some semblance of peace?

Mario González

Mario González is a performer and choreographer from Badajoz. He grew up in Seville and is currently based in Madrid. He began his dance studies in 2008, traveling across Spain to explore the urban dance scene. Later, he continued his education at the Centro Andaluz de Danza, where he delved into contemporary dance. This experience allowed him to explore new movement forms while building on his previous studies.

His passion for learning inspired him to travel and work in countries like Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. There, he collaborated with artists from diverse backgrounds, which broadened his horizons and helped him discover new and emerging forms of expression.

Currently, González travels throughout Europe to pursue his passion for teaching. He trains the next generation of dancers at the 180 Dance School and conducts numerous national and international workshops. His creative drive has inspired him to produce several dance pieces, including Phase, a solo work created in 2018 that has been performed at various festivals such as SoloDos in Ourense, Spain, and ID Night in Hereford, UK. Other notable works include Club and Si la cabeza hablase (both created for 180LAB), as well as Overthinking and Relation, which are video dances showcased at international film festivals like Queer Mvmt Fest, DanzaTTack, and Choreoscope. He also created La Tarde, performed at the DanseEncore festival in Canada, and has worked with companies such as DhhD Milano and Padova Danza in Italy. Additionally, he has choreographed commercial events for well-known brands like Oracle, L’Oréal, and Coca-Cola, as well as music videos for artists such as Orovega and Cepeda.

On the performance side, Mario González has collaborated with the Elias Aguirre Company (Spain) on pieces such as Pez Esfinge, FlowerHeads, and Empusa Poem. He has also worked with Hani Dance & Cía Z Art Company (Germany and Luxembourg) on Out of Range. Additionally, he has danced for artists like Aitana at the Los 40 Music Awards and participated in TV shows such as VSO, choreographed by Iker Karrera.
