Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds in Jackson, MS

In the context of the “Picasso Celebration 1973-2023,” this exhibition explores Pablo Picasso’s deep engagement with landscape subjects and his expansive approach to this traditional genre.

2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. The Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) is honoring his legacy with Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds, the first solo exhibition of the artist’s work to be presented in the state of Mississippi.

The exhibition explores Picasso’s expansive approach to the traditional genre of landscape painting. From his earliest days in art school until the year before his death, Picasso used landscapes to process his perception of the world and jumpstart his creative evolution. MMA’s presentation of Picasso Landscapes features 27 seven paintings and sculptures spanning the entirety of Picasso’s seventy-five-year career, along with historical film clips and photographs to contextualize the depth and breadth of Picasso’s work with landscape.

Picasso Celebration 1973-2023

The commemoration, supported by official celebrations in France and Spain, allows for a review of research and interpretations of the artist’s contributions.
