Goya’s World: Reflection & Revolution

This multimedia experience combining art and music chronicles the life of Francisco de Goya with historical instruments and projections.
The turbulent environment of Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes takes center stage in a multimedia program featuring lively instrumental and vocal works by Francisco Courcelle, Fernando Sor, Vicente Garviso, plus one of Luigi Boccherini’s beloved guitar quintets, all accompanied by projections of Goya’s artwork.
Embracing the ideals of the French revolution, yet despising the tyranny of the new Emperor Napoleon, Francisco de Goya was a man of contrast and conflict. In his paintings, he depicted all aspects of late 18th and early 19th century Spanish life.
Curated and guest directed by Ars Lyrica guitarist and lutenist Richard Savino with mezzo-soprano Cecilia Duarte and violinist Adam LaMotte, this multimedia program traces Goya’s life with projections of his paintings accompanied by the Spanish music of his time.
Duarte’s voice soars and glides with a crystalline beauty.
