La Banda Morisca 2016 U.S. Tour in Chicago

La Banda Morisca, a quintet from Spain, combines its original and creative view of traditional music with influences from the South of Mediterranean as well as Flamenco and Andalusian rock.

The Moorish Band (La Banda Morisca) was the border that separated the Nasrid Arab-Andalusian Kingdom of Granada from the Crown (Kingdom) of Aragon and Castile during the 13th and 15th century. This no man’s land, where both Christians and Muslims dealers, fugitives and nomads, as well as the first gypsies coming to the Iberian Peninsula met and coexisted, was probably the place where the forms and the sensibility of what would later come to be known as Cante Jondo started to crystallize.

La Banda Morisca is also the name of a quintet from Jerez de la Frontera, Andalusia. Most of them, separately, have been involved in different musical adventures. They have founded or collaborated with some of the most remarkable bands from the World Music scene and the traditional Spanish music circuits such as Radio Tarifa, La Jambre, Eduardo Paniagua, La Musgaña, and Hevia.

This group of musicians passionate about the arabo-andalouse heritage offer us an original and creative view of a traditional repertoire from the South of the Mediterranean with oriental and occidental influences (Muwashahas, Chaabi, Dahmane el Harachi, etc.), combined with the mood of traditional Flamenco from Jerez and Andalusian rock (Lole & Manuel, El Chozas, Triana, etc.)
