Ecusa I White Night of Science in Chicago

The first “White Night of Science” aims to inspire both adults and young Spanish and Hispanic-speaking children to take an interest in science by attending talks by scientists from different backgrounds and diverse workshops.

The inaugural I White Night of Science (I Noche Blanca de La Ciencia) is a two-day celebration of science and innovation taking place on November 15th and 16th at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago. This event will feature a series of presentations, workshops, and networking opportunities designed to inspire curiosity and promote scientific communication.

Anyone interested in science and technology is encouraged to participate. Attendees will engage with experts, take part in hands-on workshops, and explore the latest advancements in various scientific fields.

Program

On Friday, November 15, from 4 pm to 9 pm

  • 4:00–4:30 pm: Opening Ceremony with Marisa Santos, Executive Director of the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago, and Araceli Valverde, President of the ECUSA_Midwest Chapter.
  • 4:30–5:15 pm: Presentation titled “How Materials Engineering and Science Help In The Reforestation Of The Coral Reef” by Dr. Joaquín Yus, University of Urbana-Champaign.
  • 5:15–5:45 pm: Horus XV presentation titled “From Spain To The Space: Exploring The Terrain And Life In The Space Of a ‘Can’” by Thea Bouteille, Pablo Santamaría, and Miguel Ganuza from IES Diego de Velázquez, Madrid.
  • 5:45–6:00 pm: Discussion on scientific communication led by Dr. José Córdoba, UIC, and Dr. Dorys López, Head of Scientific Communications at BLOODPAC.
  • 6:00–8:30 pm: Interactive workshops, including “Launch Your Dream! First Steps to Create and Launch a CanSat” and “Why Taking Care of Our Reefs is Important?” by Dr. Joaquín Yus.
  • 6:30–7:15 pm: Break with appetizers.
  • 8:30–9:00 pm: Closing session with reflections from Marisa Santos and Araceli Valverde.

On Saturday, November 16, from 10 am to 2 pm

  • 10:00–10:30 am: Opening session led by Marisa Santos and Araceli Valverde.
  • 10:30–11:15 am: Presentation titled “Know and Explore the Artificial Intelligence (AI): The Potential of the Future?” by Dr. José Martínez, CCC Intelligent Solutions.
  • 11:15 am–noon: Keynote address titled “Living In The Atmosphere Of a Star” by Dr. Teresa Nieves, NASA.
  • 12:00–12:15 pm: Discussion on scientific communication featuring Dr. José Córdoba, UIC, Dr. Marta Celorrio, Washington University in St. Louis, and Dr. Ignacio García, Northwestern University.
  • 12:15–1:45 pm: Interactive workshops, including “Launch Your Dream! First Steps to Create and Launch a CanSat,” “From Code to Reality: Artificial Intelligence Applications Workshop” by Dr. José Martínez, and “Science Is Fun” by the ECUSA Midwest Chapter.
  • 12:30–1:00 pm: Award ceremony for the drawing competition “What Does Science Mean to You?” featuring Araceli Valverde, Marisa Santos, Dr. Teresa Nieves, and Irene Mena.
  • 1:00–1:45 pm: Break with appetizers.
  • 1:45–2:00 pm: Closing remarks and acknowledgments by Marisa Santos and Araceli Valverde.

Free, RSVP. This event is open for English speakers and Spanish speakers; simultaneous translation will be available upon request in the RSVP. You can also participate in the drawing competition for kids aged 6 to 12: What Does Science Mean to You?
