Festival Flamenco Albuquerque 2025

The annual “Festival Flamenco of Albuquerque” showcases some of the most celebrated Spanish flamenco outside of Spain.
The 38th Annual Festival Flamenco Albuquerque celebrates flamenco culture, history, and artistry. For nine days, Albuquerque becomes the central hub for flamenco, showcasing renowned artists presenting world and U.S. premieres.
This event provides a distinguished platform for attendees to enjoy renowned performances by celebrated artists and connect with a vibrant community of flamenco practitioners and enthusiasts. The festival aims to honor flamenco’s rich heritage and lasting appeal in New Mexico.

Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía presents Mariana Pineda, a flamenco ballet inspired by Federico García Lorca’s drama. The production portrays Mariana, a historical figure committed to liberty and a symbol of resistance. Set in Granada’s Albaicín district during a period of political unrest, the performance depicts Mariana secretly creating a banner for a revolutionary cause. The narrative explores betrayal, personal adversity, and sacrifice, highlighting Mariana’s steadfast adherence to her convictions. Patricia Guerrero’s interpretation integrates traditional flamenco forms with contemporary expression to explore themes of love and freedom.

This project presents new works that explore flamenco from minimalist and abstract perspectives to the deconstruction of established forms. It investigates flamenco as both a logical system and a diverse art form. The work reconfigures the traditional flamenco recital by merging individual and collective vocal narratives. The body and its movement are central, integrating vocal expression, historical lineage, and personal interpretation, while also considering environment, time, space, and lighting.

66 Palos, created and directed by Juan de Juan, presents an exploration of various flamenco palos (forms). This production examines 66 selected palos, offering a comprehensive musical and visual narrative. Each chosen palo is intended to evoke an immersive experience, where the interplay of singing, guitar, and dance conveys the diverse essence of flamenco. The performance traverses the spectrum of flamenco, from the Seguiriya to the Alegría, illustrating the diverse emotional and stylistic range that characterizes flamenco as a universal and enduring art form.

Nocturna is a performance that integrates piano, voice, and dance in a journey from dusk until dawn. The production explores themes of night, consciousness, and memory through spoken word and physical movement. The work examines the complexities of wakefulness, contrasting various states such as daydreams and nightmares, the subconscious and conscious thought, and celebration and tranquility. It also considers the night as both a mystical experience and a playful ritual. Drawing on the historical significance of night and vigilance as artistic inspirations, the performance interprets the human experience through a flamenco lens, addressing the night as a space for sleep, dreams, fears, and fantasies. Nocturna ultimately portrays the night as a dynamic entity of continuous change and movement.

Liturgia is a flamenco performance that draws inspiration from the religious and cultural rituals of Andalusia. The production investigates the evolution of Andalusian Christian liturgy during its 18th century musical golden age and its connection to popular traditions, including saetas and tonás, which influenced the development of flamenco’s cante jondo. The performance incorporates academic perspectives, those of scholars such as Gerhard Steingress and Turina. It highlights the foundational role of medieval liturgical music, encompassing Mozarabic, Gregorian, Byzantine, and Andalusian styles, in the genesis of flamenco’s distinct sound. Presented as an immersive audiovisual experience, Liturgia is structured into two autonomous yet interconnected segments: La Palabra and El Pan & El Vino.
Olga Pericet & Co: La Materia

La Materia is the second installment in Olga Pericet’s trilogy, a series that began with La Leona and will conclude with La Invencible. This triptych draws inspiration from the guitars of Antonio de Torres, recognized as the father of the modern Spanish guitar. While La Leona explored the guitar from an external viewpoint, La Materia delves inward, evoking the fundamental qualities of wood,its scent, sound, and silence. A key characteristic of Pericet’s artistic process is collaboration. For La Materia, she partners with dancer and choreographer Daniel Abreu. Both National Dance Award recipients, they co-direct, choreograph, and perform a piece designed to transcend traditional categorization. The performance features musical accompaniment by José Manuel León on guitar, Juanfe Pérez on bass, and Javier Rabadán on percussion.
Alfonso Losa & Co: Alter Ego

Alter Ego is a performance exploring the body’s potential for transformation. Three performers’ movements converge to create a singular entity, conveying an intrinsic drive to overcome disorientation. The piece reveals the performers’ authentic selves through emotional mirrors, guided by inherent protective and contradictory forces. Described as a “dance of specters,” it depicts two bodies examining the boundaries of selfhood and exploring identity within unfamiliar contexts. Alter Ego is presented as a collaborative, impulse-driven dance of movement and discovery.

A tourist in a new city has two choices: follow the guide to see the highlights or wander through its hidden corners, uncovering secret treasures. Similarly, the cantaor (flamenco singer) ventures into the “periphery” of flamenco, exploring forgotten styles and lyrics. This journey reveals a lesser-known yet equally authentic side of the art form. Recital de Cante: Del Corazón a la Boca brings these the beauty of flamenco’s untold stories to the stage.

Muy Especial represents La Moneta’s continued exploration of flamenco, presented within a minimalist framework. The production’s staging foregoes elaborate theatrical elements, emphasizing the fundamental components of her dance. Fuensanta conveys her artistic vision by integrating dance with musical and vocal elements. This approach is characterized by an inquiry where the dynamic interaction with fellow performers generates experiences that evoke the essence of Jondo flamenco.
Luisa Palacio & Co: El Penúltimo Cuplé

El Penúltimo Cuplé portrays early 20th century Spanish women who defied norms through the cuplé genre. The production highlights five iconic artists, showcasing their performances and revealing underlying social and political critiques. It also acknowledges their pioneering contributions despite societal challenges. The aim is to demonstrate the enduring relevance of cuplé.

Los Bailes Robados interprets historical dancing epidemics as expressions of emancipation and resistance. The performance uses the stage as a ritualistic space to highlight the voices of marginalized groups. Dancers’ movements symbolize a desire for freedom and rebellion. The work offers a political critique and social commentary. Dancers move from uncontrolled, intense motion to stillness, ultimately forming a unified entity that generates new rhythmic patterns. The choreography blends flamenco with avant-garde elements, exploring societal norms and the individual’s relationship with society.

On This Day, In This World, a performance by Javiera De La Fuente, is inspired by Brazilian artist Tunga’s Xifópagas Capilares Entre Nós. The piece reinterprets a myth of two sisters, united by their hair, facing forced separation or sacrifice by their community due to fear of difference. The narrative explores themes of mortality, societal fear of the unconventional, existential solitude, farewells, and profound love. It depicts the sisters’ final day, as they choose sacrifice over severing their bond. The performance contemplates questions concerning one’s final day, last words, environmental observations, and ultimate expressions through song and dance.

Fiesta Flamenca serves as the culminating event of Festival Flamenco Albuquerque, recognized as the largest and longest-running flamenco festival outside of Spain. This gala features a diverse program of flamenco music and dance, showcasing performances by internationally recognized artists and companies. Each Fiesta Flamenca presentation features a distinct cast, offering a unique representation of flamenco’s artistic breadth and intensity. The event takes place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fiesta Flamenca is a key component of Festival Flamenco Albuquerque, which encompasses performances, workshops, and cultural activities. The event aims to provide a comprehensive and engaging flamenco experience.
