Fuego Flamenco VIII presents 'Flamenco/Flamenca'

Edwin Aparicio, curator of GALA’s Fuego Flamenco since its inception, leads his dazzling troupe of dancers, cantaores, and guitarists from Spain and the U.S.

The third and final weekend of Fuego Flamenco VIII presents the world premiere of Flamenco/Flamenca, choreographed, directed, and performed by Edwin Aparicio with featured artists Norberto Chamizo from Madrid, Spain; Amparo Heredia 'La Repompilla' from Malaga, Spain; Carlos Menchaca from San Antonio, Texas; Genevieve Guinn from Austin, Texas; Anna Menéndez from Baltimore, Maryland; and Kyoko Terada from Washington, D.C.

In this new work, Aparicio continues to explore gender themes in flamenco. While steeped in tradition, remarks Aparicio, flamenco continues to evolve. What is and is not feminine or masculine in flamenco is not always a question of inflexible cultural norms. Rather, it is a complex system of organic changes - a system of subtleties and serendipitous outcomes. This duality and complexity, as interpreted by the fiery footwork and muscular grace of Aparicio and company, promise to raise the roof at GALA Theatre.

Other artists performing in Flamenco/Flamenca are singer Francisco Orozco 'Yiyi' from Barcelona, Spain; guitarist Richard Marlow from Washington, D.C., and percussionist Gonzalo Grau from Caracas, Venezuela.
