Panel discussion about AIDS in the Media, with Spanish photographer Pepo Subiranas and documentary photographer Nikki Kahn, moderated by The Washington Post Associate Editor Michel du Cille.

In December of 2008 a total of 16,513 D.C. residents had HIV/AIDS. That is approximately 3.2% of the population of DC. Spanish photographer Pepo Subiranas has spent a whole year making portrays of people in Washington DC who have overcome social and health difficulties. His work displays the individual and social challenges of people living with HIV/AIDS. He will present his photographs and talk with Nikki Kahn about how media cover the issue of AIDS. This event will take be held during the XIX International AIDS Conference in Washington (July 20-28).

Participants:

1. Pepo Subiranas is a professional photojournalist and works in the Spanish paper La Vanguardia. He has relevant experience by covering international news as a freelance photographer for the Spanish media at Washington D.C (2010-2011).
2. Nikki Kahn is a documentary photographer based in Washington, D.C. Her visual reporting spans the globe and in 2011, Kahn shared a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography with the series her Haiti’s Profound Sorrow.
3. Michel Du Cille, Associate Editor of The Washington Post and winner of three Pulitzer, will moderate the discussion.
