Juan Perro live in San Diego

Juan Perro live in San Diego

Few artists in the Spanish rock arena truly deserve the title of living legend. One of them is Santiago Auserón, better known as Juan Perro.

The former leader of one of Spain’s greatest rock bands of all time, Radio Futura, Juan Perro is widely regarded as a genre pioneer, both sides of the Atlantic. In Mexico in particular, Radio Futura was extremely influential during the ‘80s for the emerging local rock scene.

Since his solo debut in 1993, Juan Perro has embarked on a musical voyage of exploration, experimenting with a wide palette of genres outside of the standard rock-en-español realm. Cuban son, flamenco, soul, jazz and blues became the framework for Auserón’s delightful current work.

With a background as a philosophy student, and a side career as a music history writer, curator and scholar, it’s expected from Juan Perro not to take things lightly when it comes to evoking those rich musical traditions. He digs deep into those roots in search of connections and reinvigorates them in his respectful while innovative interpretations, adding his own flavor and personality to the mix.

Throughout his extensive career, Juan Perro has collaborated with many world-class musicians like Cuba’s Compay Segundo (Buena Vista Social Club) and Spain’s flamenco legends Kiko Veneno and Raimundo Amador.

He has five official releases under the Juan Perro moniker (besides his previous work with Radio Futura and his releases under his real name), of which the latest one, Río Negro (2011) will soon be released for the U.S. market, in time for his summer West Coast tour.
