Flamenco Awareness Week

Flamenco Awareness Week

Featuring new choreography by José Barrios & Company with Ana González from Madrid, the dancers are accompanied by four leading Spanish musicians and a cantaor.

After their success here in 2010, choreographer and dancer José Barrios returns to Olympia with a totally new flamenco program. Flamenco Algarabía reflects exotic multicultural influences and also stars dancer Ana Maria Gonzalez with other internationally renowned artists of the Fundación Casa Patas of Madrid.

With their annual United States tour, Conservatorio Fundación Flamenco Casa Patas is in pursuit of its mission to promote this unique art form —one which was recently recognized by UNESCO as a “Contribution… and Cultural Heritage of Humanity”— and to support young people with an interest in flamenco.

José Barrios is widely regarded as the most multifaceted artist of all the flamenco professionals performing on stage today. His versatility, the passion that he emanates from the stage, and his respect and knowledge of flamenco traditions transform him into a gift to even the most sophisticated patrons of flamenco and an engaging surprise to those who are not yet acquainted with this art form.

The success of the 2010 United States tour of Flamenco Casa Patas with the show Por Si Acaso Amanece has motivated José Barrios to return for the entire month of November to the cities of Seattle, Olympia, Washington-DC, Boston, and Miami.

Since the celebration of Washington’s Flamenco Awareness Week is an opportunity to “share in the richness of Spanish heritage” and for “educational and cultural exchange,” Flamenco Casa Patas is offering several presentations designed to introduce a broader audience, including students, to this “passionate and soulful” genre of music and dance.
