'Back to the Roots': A journey into the future of craftmanship

Art and hand crafted work fuse together in the creativity of Spanish fashion.

The Association of Spanish Fashion Designers (ACME) presents the exposition Back to the Roots, that starts October 20th in the Gabarrón Foundation in New York. This project is organized by Spain Arts & Culture.

In Back to the Roots, 21 Spanish designers present their works combining craftsmanship and century-old techniques. With their works the designers are showing Spanish culture; its history and its future.

Through the designs of Amaya Arzuaga, Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada, Ailanto, Ana Locking, Andrés Sardá, Custo Barcelona, Davidelfín, Devota & Lomba, Duyos, Elisa Palomino, Francis Montesinos, Helena Rohner, Ion Fiz, Jesús del Pozo, Juanjo Oliva, Lemoniez, Miquel Palacio, Miriam Ocariz, Nicolás Vaudelet, Roberto Torretta and Teresa Helbig, value is placed upon the creation of fashion not only physically, as a hand-made craft, but also intellectually in the conception and development of a collection. This exhibition brings us expertise in craftsmanship and fashion design Made in Spain.

Between the 16th and 18th century, Spain was dominant in imposing black clothing as a symbol of power. Great Spanish designers such as Fortuny, Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo marked the 20th century and today there are brands such as Manolo Blahnik and Paco Rabanne.

With the birth of our democracy in Spain came a new system of fashion —fashion designers and art united— giving us a clear example of the changes in the country. From this, Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week was also born and is already in its 54th edition.
