War, Dictatorship and Historic Memory

This conference brings together scholars to discuss recent developments in the movement for recognition of atrocities of the Spanish Civil war.

Francisco Fernández, professor of Anthropology at the University of Extremadura, is currently working on the exhumation of common burials from the Spanish Civil War period, and is the main researcher for the project titled Politics of Historic Memory in Contemporary Spain, sponsored by the Spanish Government. He has actively participated in many of the exhumations, compiling verbal testimonials and studying the confrontations between both sides of the Spanish Civil War.

This symposium is organized by five universities from Massachusetts: Massachusetts University at Amherst, Mount Holyoke University, Smith University, University of Hampshire and Amherst University.
