Guastavino Vaulting: The Art of Structural Tile

Guastavino Vaulting: The Art of Structural Tile

The Smithsonian Institution’s Architectural History and Historic Preservation Division and the National Building Museum present Guastavino Vaulting: The Art of Structural Tile by John Ochsendorf.

A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, Ochsendorf, a professor of engineering at MIT, will give an illustrated talk on the history of this magical building technique originated by the Spanish Guastavino family. Guastavino vaults are in hundreds of buildings throughout the United States, most notably in New York and Boston. The lecture will be held in the National Museum of Natural History’s Baird Auditorium, a spectacular example of Guastavino technique.

A book signing will take place in the museum’s shop after the conference. Free and open to the public. No registration required.
