GRANTA: The best of young Spanish-language novelists

Building Bridges: Spanish and English Language Writers in Conversation is a literary tour in major US cities featuring some of the Best Young Spanish Language Novelists, from May 16th to May 25th.

Several venues around the city will host roundtables/discussions between some of the Best Young Spanish Language Novelists and renowned American authors and editors.

  1. The Making of Granta en Español. At The Center for Fiction, 17 East 47th St., New York, NY, on May 23rd at 7:00 PM. Tel: (212) 755-6710. Spanish language authors Andrés Barba (Spain), Oliverio Coelho (Argentina), Carlos Labbé (Chile), Javier Montes (Spain), Alberto Olmos (Spain), and Antonio Ortuño (Mexico) will be joined by editor of Granta John Freeman, Spanish author and jury member Mercedes Monmany, as well as co-founding editors of Granta en español Valerie Miles and Aurelio Major, in a roundtable discussion on the selection process and on the significance of being selected by Granta as one of the Best Young Spanish Language Novelists.
  2. Editors in translation / Writers being translated. At McNally Jackson Bookstore, 52 Prince St., New York, NY, on May 24th at 7:00 PM. Tel: (212) 274-116. Celebrated American editors Barbara Epler (New Directions), Jonathan Galassi (Farrar Straus and Giroux), Peter Mayer (The Overlook Press), Amy Hundley (Grove Atlantic Inc), and Valerie Miles (Duomo ediciones) will be joined by emerging Spanish language writers Andrés Barba (Spain), Oliverio Coelho (Argentina), Carlos Labbé (Chile), Javier Montes (Spain), Alberto Olmos (Spain), and Antonio Ortuño (Mexico), in a roundtable discussion on the difficulties faced by editors and authors in translation projects.

Writers from Granta’s Best of Young Spanish Language Novelists issue talk with Francine Prose on their experiences in the US. Francine Prose, author of the novel My New American Life (Harper Collins, April 2011) and authors from Granta’s Best of Young Spanish Language Novelists issue: Oliverio Coelho (Un hombre llamado Lobo, Duomo ediciones, 2011), Javier Montes, (Segunda Parte, Pre-Textos, 2010), Carlos Yushimito (Oz, Duomo ediciones, 2011). Moderator: Nuria Vilanova, Professor of Foreign Languages and Literature at American University, Washington D.C.

Roundtable discussion about literature in translation with some of the Best Young Spanish Language Novelists according to Granta: Andrés Barba (Spain), Federico Falcó (Argentina), Rodrigo Hasbún (Bolivia), Carlos Labbé (Chile), Antonio Ortuño (Mexico). Moderators: co-founding editors of Granta en español, Valerie Miles and Aurelio Major. This roundtable discussion will be followed by the closing reception of the US tour of “Building Bridges: Spanish & English Language Writers in Conversation”, which will be attended by John Freeman, editor of Granta and other Granta authors: Oliverio Coelho (Argentina), Javier Montes (Spain), Alberto Olmos (Spain) Carlos Yushimito (Peru).
