Flamenco in the last 50 years

A screening of the groundbreaking 1952 documentary Duende y Misterio del Flamenco will follow a conference by Estela Zatania on a half-century of Flamenco.

Tradition and evolution are not incompatible. Flamenco cannot stand still, but neither can it be reinvented overnight. This conference gives a lively overview of the changes in flamenco song, guitar-playing and dance over the last 50 years, a dynamic period the speaker has observed first-hand. After the talk and slide presentation, the groundbreaking 1952 documentary Duende y Misterio del Flamenco (78 mins.) will be shown. This work by Edgar Neville was the first serious attempt to visually document the flamenco genre, and features legendary singers and dancers of the era. After the film, there will be an interactive discussion period with the audience.
