Dr. Fuster, President of Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital and of the American Heart Association, shares his experience at prestigious institutions and emphasizes the importance of education and teamwork to improve health.

Mount Sinai Heart was renamed the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in October 2023 to honor the man who transformed Mount Sinai’s cardiovascular program into one of the world’s leading heart centers while advancing cardiovascular medicine around the globe.

The Fuster Heart Hospital is an umbrella of cardiovascular medicine services, research, and education that spans the Mount Sinai Health System. Mount Sinai Heart at The Mount Sinai Hospital was ranked No. 4 worldwide for cardiology and No. 5 worldwide for cardiac surgery for 2024, according to Newsweek’s “The World’s Best Specialized Hospitals,” and No. 1 in New York and No. 4 nationally for cardiology, heart, and vascular surgery, according to U.S. News & World Report® for 2023-2024.

Charney, MD, the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “His groundbreaking contributions to the field have transformed the nature of care for patients well beyond the walls of Mount Sinai.”

Dr. Fuster became Director of the Cardiovascular Institute at Mount Sinai in 1994, then founding Director of Mount Sinai Heart in 2006. Over the decades, he built the program into one of the world’s top-ranked centers for cardiovascular medicine, cardiac surgery, and advanced research.

Cardiologist

Dr. Fuster, MD, PhD, is the President of Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital and the Physician-in-Chief at The Mount Sinai Hospital. He also serves as the General Director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid, Spain, which is equivalent to the NHLBI.

He received the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research for his significant contributions to biomedicine, particularly in cardiovascular health, which have enhanced the understanding of acute ischemic pathology. Additionally, he has been honored with the Severo Ochoa Biomedical Research Award and the Mapfre “For a Lifetime” Award for his work in preventing and treating cardiovascular disease.

In 2012, the American College of Cardiology recognized Dr. Fuster as one of two American Living Legends in Cardiovascular Medicine. He also received the 2012 Research Achievement Award, the highest honor from the American Heart Association.

According to the Cybermetrics Lab research group, Dr. Fuster is the most cited Spanish researcher in history based on Google Scholar rankings.

He founded the SHE ‘la Caixa’ Foundation (Science, Health, and Education), which he directs to improve overall population health, with a special focus on youth.

In addition to his scientific work, Dr. Fuster is committed to social responsibility as a science communicator. He has published several books promoting healthy habits.
