IATI Theater
Spanish actress Alba Flores shows us IATI, a small theater located in Noho with Latin American roots and vanguard theater plays in Spanish.
Established in 1968 to produce and perform theatrical works written in Spanish, IATI (International Theater Arts Institute) introduces New Yorkers from all walks of life to contemporary Latin American dance and theater artists. The Institute addresses contemporary issues of broad human concern and seeks to frame those issues within an appropriate cultural context in order to provoke introspection, social awareness, responsibility and accountability.
At public workshops, professional artists share their talents with children, adults and working artists in an intimate and personalized setting. IATI presents most performances in Spanish with English supertitles, and occasionally develops performances at senior centers and holds workshops for seniors.
Bilingual Latinx, IATI Theater’s company, creates cutting-edge performing arts pieces empowering unique voices and so supporting multicultural, diverse and underserved communities. While highlighting the complexity, contradictions, richness and depth of experiences among the many Latin cultures, IATI brings on stage plays with subject matter that are culturally relevant, political, challenging, as well as entertaining.
