Spain Writes, America Reads
The Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. presents the literature program Spain Writes, America Reads, an initiative that promotes the translation and dissemination of literary works by Spanish authors in the United States with the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and other partners.
The program is based on 3 lines of action:
- Supporting American publishers to promote the translation of Spanish authors through Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) grants for translation and travel expenses of the authors, as well as the coordination of the tours by the Cultural Office in collaboration with different partners and local counterparts.
- Supporting translators of works by Spanish authors into English in the U.S. through the Spain-USA Foundation Translation Award (SUFTA), a prize offered annually by the American Literary Translators Association in conjunction with the Spain-USA Foundation. It is awarded to the best translations into English of literary prose works originally written by authors of Spanish nationality, published in the US the previous year, and will have its first edition in 2022.
- Lastly, the Cultural Office, with the support of AC/E, organizes a series of tours to promote the internationalization of young Spanish authors in the U.S., taking into account the selections made by initiatives such as 10 of 30: New Spanish Narrative or Granta: The Best Young Narrators in Spanish’, with the purpose of having their works translated into English and published in the United States.
