Screening: 'The secret in their eyes'

Benjamín, a middle-aged, retired federal agent, has decided to write a novel about an unsolved murder case he was assigned to decades ago, in the early 1970s.

In order to reacquaint himself with the case, he appears one day at the office of his former boss, Judge Irene Menéndez Hastings (Soledad Villamil), and requests her advice. With each successive draft, Benjamín's novel awakens forgotten memories of the case and repressed feelings between the couple, slowly drawing the spectator into a vortex of intrigue, danger and thwarted love. Campanella's deft screenplay (adapted from a novel by Eduardo Sacheri) interweaves present and past, suspense and romance, and the generic devices of film noir with a melancholic look back at Argentina's harrowing history of political violence and fascist undercurrents. Darín's towering performance as Benjamín lends depth and resonance to Campanella's gripping thriller, winner of the 2010 Oscar to the Best Foreign Film, and the second highest grossing movie in the history of Argentine cinema.
